    The eCultureMap (www.eculturemap.eu) is the effort of the Europeana partners to put their cultural content on the one single global geographical interactive knowledge map. It is a creative and efficient re-use of Europeana open meta data which are under licence Creative Commons CC0 1.0. The concept of the eCultureMap is to relate geographical context of cultural objects with national portals and in international contex of Europeana. Current version of the map displays more than 2 million digital cultural heritage objects from European museums, libraries, archives. The content of eCultureMap could be also re-used via web services in other cultural, travelling and educational portals. The eCultureMap is developed using open source software: OpenLayers, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, GeoServer, Apache Solr – Lucene, and other.

    With this project we want to highlight the opportunities that emerge once institutions start to properly publish their data online and allow others to link it, enrich it, visualise it, and contextualise it. These opportunities are in particular helpful when dealing with limited/uncommunicative collections; collections that are hard to display because of their size or because they are difficult to engage with. In this project we show how you could use a linked dataset of Roman coins to tell stories about Roman history. We do this by visualising a numismatic collection created by the project http://nomisma.org/ through time and space in the online research environment we have developed: nodegoat.net. The outcome shows the potential that lies in these collections and how they can be used to engage with a larger audience. The final visualisations also show how linked data creates new opportunities to use existing collections within the walls of the museum or in an online interface.

    We would like to continue to develop this concept in order to help institutions to get their data out there and produce meaningful and kick-ass visualisations.

    Corbicula is a gateway application, for automating the publication of Linked Open Data from Collection Management Systems.

    Corbicula uses OAI-PMH to extract data from Collection Management Systems, XSLT transformations to convert the metadata records to RDF graphs, and the SPARQL Graph Store protocol to store the data in a SPARQL store, for where it is published as Linked Open Data.

    Corbicula was originally written as a set of command-line scripts, but is now being redeveloped as a web application, for ease of hosting and administration.

The library was looking for a vendor that could digitize three existing printed volumes and turn them into a modern online solution with an option to edit existing data and add new data, both structured and rich-text.

    Graphity Linked Data Platform was used for developing the Web application that publishes Linked Data as well as user-friendly and mobile-ready XHTML.

    A project by 3 members of staff from the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, Glen Robson, Paul McCann and Owain Roberts.

    An idea in its very early stages to use DBpedia and Wikidata to discover and expose connections between concepts and images published on Wiki Commons from our own collections.

    With the aim of allowing our users to search and browse our collections based on crowd sourced concepts not present in our native metadata

    Navigate clusters of images organised by Wikipedia types and subjects. For example view images of People or things.

    Compare and enhance our own metadata.

    Provide a new way of discovering images based on linked data concepts rather than traditional Catalogue search

    In the last decade, Europe has conducted a tremendous effort to make cultural, educational and scientific resources publicly available. Although such massive amounts of culturally and scientifically rich content are available, the potential of its use for educational and scientific purposes remains largely untapped. One reason can be seen in current web content dissemination mechanisms which are dominated by a small number of large central hubs like major search engines (e.g. Google), social networks (e.g. Facebook) or online encyclopaedias (e.g. Wikipedia). In order to maintain their valuable services, those large hubs have to focus on commercially viable mainstream content. While cultural and scientific resources provide valuable and educational content, they cannot be considered as ‘mainstream’. Quite contrary, most of this can be considered as high-quality niche content for a rather small community and forms part of the so-called Long Tail. The Long Tail theory , first introduced by Chris Anderson, argues that in internet-based markets, niche content adds up to a huge body of knowledge, but is hidden from most users. In the Long Tail, content is maintained and curated by a large number of small to medium-sized institutions such as memory organisations (e.g. archives and museums), national and digital libraries and open educational repositories. However, the few large Web hubs hardly support the dissemination of this Long Tail content leaving a gap for bringing cultural and scientific wealth into educational and scientific processes.

    Linking existing vocabularies from PREMIS, NEPOMUK, ORE and others, the Preservation Planning Ontology would fill a real gap the digital preservation world.

    Building on the Format Policy Registry, a tool that is bundled with the open source Archivematica project, the first goal of this project is to develop a new ontology that allows Preservation Rules to be described, along with the tools used to enact those rules.

    The second goal will be to develop a reference implementation of this new ontology in Archivematica.

    The Open Memory Project has been realized by the Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea CDEC Foundation in Milan in partnership with Regesta. exe from Rome.
    The CDEC Foundation (www.cdec.it) is an institute of research involved in the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the Jews in Italy in the contemporary age. It was born in 1955 and since then its special focus is on the documents and testimonies about the Shoah in Italy. Regesta.exe (www.regesta.com) is one of the most important italian IT companies, specialized in LOD technologies applied to the cultural heritage.

    The main aim of the Open Memory Project is the publication on the web of information and resources coming from the CDEC Foundation’s archives and library, using the LInked Open Data Technologies.
